DESCRIPTION:“In 650 words\, tell us who you are beyond test scores\, transcripts\, lists of activities\, recommendations…” How hard could it be to capture a sense of self on the page in a college essay? Turns out\, it can be challenging. \nThe blank screen.\nThe word limit.\nThe pressure to impress.\nThe looming deadline. \nThe way to tackle the college essay is to simply begin\, and this workshop will provide a starting point to make the writing task less daunting. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn strategies for framing college essays\, brainstorm potential topics\, read successful examples and take away tips on how to capture your voice on the page. While the task at hand may be college essay writing\, you will see the ways writing can be a useful means of self-reflection. \nClass structure: One hour for curriculum\, and 30-minutes for writing and questions. \nOffered online on Zoom: (A link will be sent with your registration confirmation)\nTuesday\, September 27—7 to 8:30 PM\nSaturday\, October 1—10 to 11:30 AM \nCost:\n$15 per student. (Need-based scholarships are available. Please inquire.) \nYour instructor: Karen Downing taught Language Arts and Gifted and Talented courses at Valley High School in West Des Moines for 34 years. SUMMARY:Swift Literary Festival—Pop-Up Event
DESCRIPTION:Join the Ames Writers Collective for our Swift Literary Festival\, a Pop-Up event\, on Sunday\, September 25th at the annual Octagon Art Festival. (10 AM to 4 PM) \nUnder our tent we will host local authors and their books\, offer writing-prompt free-writes\, and a one-day community-story-writing project. Depending upon electricity availability\, we will host an end-of-day Open Mic for writers who have stopped by to write with us. \nStay tuned for a list of authors\, an indie press and workshop instructor joining us at our table.

SUMMARY:Swift Youth Writers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Open to 8th to 12th Graders\nFive consecutive sessions – July 18\, 19\, 20\, 21 and 22\n10:30 AM to 1 PM | With lunch\nLocation: Ames Public Library\nFREE \n\n\nFunded by a Rotary Club of Ames Community Grant\, the Swift Youth Writers Workshops offer kids an escape into creative writing and the opportunity to connect with other youth writers. \n\n\nRegardless of genre\, for five days writers will come together in a safe space to read an inspirational piece of writing and write together to timed-writing prompts. At the end of each session\, writers will be invited to read aloud to the group to receive positive feedback. These sessions are based upon the Amherst Writers & Artists Method\, a methodology rooted in the belief that everyone is a writer. All feedback given is focused on the unique voice and strengths of the writer to encourage and model authenticity\, peer support\, and self-confidence. \nThese FREE sessions will be held at the Ames Public Library. Participants will write from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM\, and a boxed lunch will be served at 12:30.
