SUMMARY:In 650 Words—The College Essay Workshop
DESCRIPTION:“In 650 words\, tell us who you are beyond test scores\, transcripts\, lists of activities\, recommendations…” How hard could it be to capture a sense of self on the page in a college essay? Turns out\, it can be challenging. \nThe blank screen.\nThe word limit.\nThe pressure to impress.\nThe looming deadline. \nThe way to tackle the college essay is to simply begin\, and this workshop will provide a starting point to make the writing task less daunting. \nIn this workshop\, you will learn strategies for framing college essays\, brainstorm potential topics\, read successful examples and take away tips on how to capture your voice on the page. While the task at hand may be college essay writing\, you will see the ways writing can be a useful means of self-reflection. \nClass structure: One hour for curriculum\, and 30-minutes for writing and questions. \nOffered online on Zoom: (A link will be sent with your registration confirmation)\nTuesday\, September 27—7 to 8:30 PM\nSaturday\, October 1—10 to 11:30 AM \nCost:\n$15 per student. (Need-based scholarships are available. Please inquire.) \nYour instructor: Karen Downing taught Language Arts and Gifted and Talented courses at Valley High School in West Des Moines for 34 years. A regular contributor to the Chicago Tribune\, his essays have appeared in theBoston Globe\, Orion\, The Iowa Review\, and many others. Dozens of his essays have also aired on NPR and Chicago Public Radio. \nJohn T. Price is the award-winning author of four books of creative nonfiction\, including Man Killed by Pheasant and Other Kinships and All is Leaf: Essays and Transformations\, and editor of The Tallgrass Prairie Reader. He is the Regents/Foundation Distinguished Professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha\, where he directs the English Department’s Creative Nonfiction Writing Program. He lives with his family in the Loess Hills of western Iowa. \nMUSIC\n\nDebra Marquart and The Bone People—In The Bone People\, jazz-poet Debra Marquart and her collaborators\, Peter Manesis (guitar) and Anthony Stevens (percussion)\, fuse elements of rock\, jazz\, and rhythm & blues with poetry. In live performances\, The Bone People move from storytelling to poetry to song\, drawing connections between different genres and art forms to create a sound that blends the lyricism of poetry with the power of acoustic and electric music.

DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, October 6th the Author Spotlight will feature Mary Warner\, author of Adventure on Gallop Ghosts Islands and illustrator by Rex Heer. \nMary Warner is a triathlete who loves to race and swim in the Atlantic Ocean. She has written countless unpublished stories about her experiences being an athlete\, one of which inspired this collaboration. \nRex Heer lives in a log cabin he built in the woods in the hills overlooking the Des Moines River Valley. \nThe Author Spotlight Series is presented by the Ames Writers Collective and KHOI Community Radio Station LIVE and In Person.
