• Last October 2021, the Ames Writers Collective was honored to host Janis Cooke Newman for an afternoon Author Talk with founder, Ana McCracken. The event was held at Dog-Eared Books, and during the course of an hour, Janis and Ana discussed books, craft and the writer’s life while interacting an audience of writers and enthusiastic readers.

    Janis Cooke Newman is the author of two award-winning historical novels, Mary: Mrs. A. Lincoln and A Master Plan for Rescue, and the memoir The Russian Word for Snow. Janis is the founder of Lit Camp, a writers conference based in Northern California, and Page Street, a Co-working Space for Writers. Janis is and editor and teacher committed to helping writers get their work out into the world.

  • Beginning in September, join Ana McCracken for Open Write Tuesdays on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 3 to 4:30 PM CT & the 3rd Thursday of the month from 7 to 8:30 PM CT. All on Zoom.

    During an open write, we sign on, have a brief check in, and then write together in community uninterrupted for 90 minutes. At the end of our session, we will regroup and share our writing success.

    What to write during an Open Write? Start writing a new story. Edit a draft manuscript. Suggest a writing prompt to the group. Write a query letter. The writing possibilities are endless. Writing in community creates synergy, and open writes provide structure for deadlines.

  • Words Meet Art is a literary arts event demonstrating through words how art evokes feelings, triggers memories and stories, and inspires conversations across divides and demographics. Ten writers chosen through a submission process will be presented with an image, and given 48-hours to write a piece of fiction, nonfiction, or a poem.

    Authors read their piece during the Words Meet Art event.

    Submission criteria and deadlines will be announced soon for the November 6th Words Meet Art event held in partnership with the Brunnier Art Museum and the John Buck: Prints and Sculpture exhibit.
